Processing, photos, joining and more

Next week

Following a successful session last Monday we’re going to be holding our second session, “An Introduction to Processing” this Monday at 6.00pm in KS14. Processing is a programming language designed towards artists and those with an interest in creating beautiful, mesmerising creations; it’s also nice and simple to pick-up.
We’re going to try to get access to a computer room for the second half of the session, but if you have a laptop please bring it with you just in case.

Other info

Photos from the Squishy Circuits session can be found in our flickr group at http://www.flickr.com/groups/tinkersoc/.
The week after next we will be running our first OpenMic of the year. If you have something interesting to share, please please please get in touch. OpenMic sessions consist of 3-4 15 minute presentations, and though the committee love talking and giving presentations, we would much prefer to hear about cool things that you’re up to.
The week after the OpenMic will be our first social and will involve bottle rockets, so please save a couple of 2 litre bottles which we’ll be able to use in the session.
If you enjoyed the last session and want to join us, please visit http://tinkersoc.org/join and follow the instructions.
And finally, for those that are interested, the weekly committee meeting minutes are available online at http://goo.gl/pjpuv.

Cheers!

Welcome to TinkerSoc!

Our first session will be held this Monday, meeting in KS4 (A seminar
room in Keynes, don’t worry, we’ll put up signs) at 6.00pm.

We will be playing with conductive PlayDoh to teach the basics of
circuitry and electronics, and we’ll be giving you a brief into to the
society and its committee.

Image blatantly ripped off from Hackaday.

The first two sessions are free to all, after that however you’ll need
to be a member to attend. To join TinkerSoc follow the simple
instructions here: http://tinkersoc.org/join/.

See you soon!

Matt

Welcome Freshers!

Hi everyone,

Welcome to TinkerSoc, the only society at the University of Kent that introduces you to the skills, knowledge and motivation to tinker with everyday objects and have a fun time while doing so.

I’m Matt, and I’m the president of TinkerSoc for the 2010/2011 academic year. I’m a computer scientist by trade, and am currently in my final year. I’ve been involved with TinkerSoc for three years, and am enthusiastic about playing with electronics in a fun way. My role in the society is to make sure we can do more, that we do it well, that we enjoy ourselves and that your views are taken into account as to where the society goes.

Emma (our treasurer) and Mex (our secretary) are the rest of the committee and do much of the event planning and session organisation on top of their stated roles. Emma is a PhD student in the Electronics department and Mex is a PhD student in the School of Computing.

We have put together an exciting and varied year in tinkering, and it’s one that we hope you will thoroughly enjoy. We’re starting off the year with a hands-on and messy introduction to electronics and tinkering.

We can’t wait to see you!

Cheers,

Matt
